What does a music producer do anyway?

Imagine your song is a beautiful body, unclothed and un-styled. A music producer is essentially the fashion stylist, hair and makeup artist to that body. A music producer takes a song in its bare bones and dresses it with the right musical arrangement, instruments and trimmings, with the purpose of bringing the song to its most polished and refined expression. Producers coordinate and track (record) the musicians, and sometimes also mix and master the recording.*
